Expressions of Compassion:
Selections from the Barbara Morris Goodbody Photography Collection
Barbara Morris Goodbody, a generous supporter of the Museum of Art, recently gave over one hundred photographs from her distinguished collection to the museum. Focusing on 20th and 21st century photographers, the collection has an emphasis on empathy and compassion, themes of great importance to her. “Expressions of Compassion”, the museum’s first exhibition from this collection and first to make selections from the collection available to the public, celebrates this gift.
Photographers represented in the collection include Amy Arbus, Melonie Bennett, Bruce Brown, John Paul Caponigro, Walter Chappell, Dominic Chavez, Lucien Clergue, Donna DeCesare, Madeline de Sinety, Arthur Fink, Ernst Haas, Brenton Hamilton, Séan Alonzo Harris, Judy Glickman Lauder, Stella Johnson, Elvira Piedra, Elizabeth Opalenik, Barbel Scianghetti, Jean Pierre Sudre, Todd Webb, and David Wolfe. All photographs Bates College Museum of Art, Barbara Morris Goodbody Photography Collection.
An illustrated catalogue with an essay by Susan Danly, entries on each photographer drafted by museum interns, and images of photographs in the collection, is forthcoming.

October 24, 6-8 pm, Talk by Brenton Hamilton about the collection and Catalog signing
The significance of any collection is its capacity to share, enlighten, instruct and reflect upon our society or perhaps even mirror the times of its making. As well as allow us to know the energies and force of the collector themselves. We know well, Goodbody’s devotion and championing of the arts in Maine and beyond, but it is her fine sensibility as a practitioner that informs this robust collection.
- Brenton Hamilton, Professor of Photography

Barbara Goodbody has long been a leader in support of the arts in Maine. Her collection reflects her commitment and dedication. Featuring, some of the best makers in Maine, Santa Fe, Europe, and beyond, this compilation is idiosyncratic and optimistic, and mirrors her world philosophy. It is also curious and egalitarian. Barbara values the artist as much as the product, and the monetary value, or, the prestige of a piece is not what compels her to acquire it. It’s the content of the work that matters to her most. Many of these pieces were worth far less when they were attained years ago. That said, there is a staggering amount of important and valuable photographs in the assortment.
